Screw that holds down the gear shifter cover. Help!

I lost the original screw under my seat to the point of no return in the winter. The guy at Benz put in a new one for me when I had to bring it by once.

Today I needed to remove the cover again as I am peeling off the carbon wrap due to it deforming (as some on here said it would). I am doing a little orange theme to go with the outside.

I for the life of me CANNOT get this screw back in. I hate this design and find it sooooo bloody tedious. I fiddled with it for 1.5 hrs, ruining my freshly painted cover too.

So I ask ou guys, the experts, any tips?

I dont have a Tap that small with the thread thats on the bolt.

I have no idea how he got it in. any self tap screws?

notice the metal around the whole, that was there before.

The door handles came out as I hoped they would.

Rob.

..I know that you know but ....righty tighty lefty loosey...

...by the picture it is a tapping screw ...secure the screw to the driver with some masking tape ...that will hold it in place and keep you from loosing it...or use a magnetic tip driver...will the screw go in the hole all by itself?

jetfuel...where's my super glue at?

Walk away from it for today. Tomorrow you'll try it again and viola - it'll go right in! Happens to me all the time. I just walk away for a little while and regroup my thoughts. Whenever I come back to the job I magically get it perfect even though I spent forever earlier trying the same thing.

seriously.. 1 1/2 hrs on done screw..damn.
I agree though, attach it to the tip of the screwdriver (tape, magnetic tip, etc). Sometimes it helps if you rotate a 1/4 turn or so counter-clockwise which lets the screw "fall" into its thread without trying to cut new ones, then turn clockwise to screw it in.

Anything sticky to hold the screw to the driver. +1 on turning the screw counter clock wise 1/4 turn before turning clock wise.

Thanks guys, Problem solved. I knew the original one was under the seat. 4 Torx bolts and 5 minutes later freed the original bolt by ousting the seat. Much thinner.
