Seat belt retrainer question...

On the smart seat by your head there is a seatbelt guide. For some reason, my seatbelt seems to somehow get curled-up in the vertical slot and then it won't automatically retract as needed. This seems to happen no matter which seat I'm using. One thing is, my seat position is usually all the way back as a passenger and just a touch up from all the way back as the driver. Has anyone else experinced this problem? We are wondering if maybe the seatbelt has actually gotten "rolled-over" when it retracts. I have pulled the seatbelt all the way out and it seems to be in the proper position. Any help would be appreciated!

Hasn't happened to my seat belt, but in the first 100 miles it happened twice, with two different passengers. The passenger seat was all the way back at the time. I keep my seat all the way back also, but of course that's not as far back as the passenger seat.

Happens to me all the time on the passenger side. Very frustrating and no cure that I have found.

My wife gets mad at me because it happens to here all the time. I never have the problem, but my seat is ahead and hers is all the way back. I think the lead between the rectractor and the guide is long enough on my side to keep it from happening. IMHO - untested and poor design.

Yup...

This happens on the passenger side of my Smart all the time. As mentioned above, it seems to only happen when the seat is back pretty far; I have not had the problem on the driver side because my seat is adjusted closer to the pedals.

I guess if it poses a huge annoyance, you could wrap the slot with some electrical tape to keep the belt from exiting the guide or wrapping over on itself!

Same problem here. Passenger side it always happens. Thought it was the wife's fault but no matter who sits there it happens to. I haven't thought up a solution yet, right now it gives me something to whine about....:

I was think about taking a razor knife and trying to trim out the "rolled" edges on either side of the verticle slot a bit. Wife isn't happy about that thought though, worried about "warranty" problems once it is trimmed. At least now, I'm glad it isn't just me...Thanks everyone!
Just had another thought...anyone remember some of the older cars had a rectangler piece of plastic a couple of inches long that acted as a guide close to the seatbelt retractor. It was a touch bit wider then the seatbelt and was thin enough for the belt to slide freely thru but would not allow it to roll over. This might work placed behind the seatbelt guide on the seat leaving enough room before the seatbelt actually goes back into the retractor. Will look into this possiblity a bit more...

I cut a piece of black plastic tubing and pushed it into the slot. The belt stays where it belongs and the tubing can be removed if needed.
