Secondary air injection pump

I have successfully removed the secondary air injector pump as mine had quit working. It wasn't that hard. Steps I took are 1. jack up car and remove right rear tire. 2. Remove wheel well cover, but there are 4 plastic grommets that Evilution didn't mention. Just pull out the center pin and pry out the base. 3.This exposes the pump in a metal frame anchored by three star screws. Two of the screws(one on the side facing you and one reached from the engine compartment with an extension) are easy. The third screw is under the pump and can't be removed with ratchet and star socket. I reached under the pump with vise grips and turned the head of the screw to get it out. 4. Disconnect the air hose and the electric connection and pull the whole frame and pump out. The pump part only available from Smart is $159 plus tax. Smart wanted $600 for the replacement installation.5. Take the old pump out of the frame assembly, put new one in and install in reverse order of above.

Pump price, etc.?

Having the same problem with a friend's pump. Replaced the valve and pump ran for a short time. Now failed and P0410 code withb engine light on. Don't think the relay has failed. Any idea where the relay is located? Where did you find the pump fro $159? My dealer in Charlotte wants $210. Does the pump come with or without the brackets (assume without). Too many questions! Thanks!

I had one go out on my '09 Pure. Took a couple hours to replace it and all was back to normal. It's not the end of the world if it dies out, but it will leave a CEL on the dash which is a guaranteed smog check failure in California.

It squirts extra air into the exhaust manifold to help the catalytic converter clean up the exhaust during the first short period of engine operation, when it has to run slightly rich after cold start. It stops once the engine is ready for closed-loop operation (o2 sensor is up to temp and starts giving a good signal, catalyst has lit up, engine doesn't need to be slightly rich in order to keep running, etc).

One of those things California mandates in order to prevent true auto enthusiasts from enjoying their classic cars, justify higher registration fees, while also collecting more taxes from all the smog check businesses charging for smog checks.

Oh yeah, also to clean up our dirty air. That is the primary purpose afterall.

To ivanwhite, the vacume pump price was correct 1 1/2 yrs. ago ($159.95) from Winston Salem smart/mercedes dealer. its only the plastic pump, you reuse the old bracket suspension mount. The first installation, the pump wouldn't run. Took it out and tested it and it was fine, so took it to smart and after much elec. checking and $100 they said it had blown the 50 amp fuse located in the battery compartment under the passenger floorboard. (Maybe your relay is here). They couldn't detect the problem without pulling a new smart in off the lot and running a diagnosis. It ran fine for a half year then the new pump failed and check engine light came on.( the signs of failure are a overly loud jet-like whine when pump starts, thats the bearings in the motor going). Smart replaced the part for free as parts have a 1 yr. guarantee. Havn't had any trouble for a year. Check engine light came on once with same emissions code, had local mechanic clear the code and been fine since. Hope this helps
