Oil Changes

I started using the Synthetic "Royal Purple" Oil ? ? ? ? I hope it's Ok? However my primary concern is why does my oil always seem black even after a fresh oil change...... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Synthetic oil has a high detergent action. When I changed to Amsoil in my Land Rover Defender 90, they had me run their synth with a high detergent additive from the shop to my home ~30 miles. Then I drained the crankcase, changed the filter and oil and ran the Amsoil from then on. The shop recommended short interval oil changes for the first 5000 miles, oil changes at 1000, 2000, then the final at 5000 after the change. The engine had 30,000 on it at the change. Ya gotta get em clean!!!

I see Pep Boys carries Mobil 1 0W-40 full syn by the quart or case. About $5/qt.

Please forgive if you don't have Pep Boys in your area.

The oil is doing what it is supposed to do - keeping the carbon pulled down from the cylinder walls in suspension. Otherwise it would settle and semi-solidify in the form of sludge that could block oil passages. Bad cholesterol!

Hi Joe,

Which RPI oil are you using - the new fully synthetic European formula 0W40? I've ordered a case that should be here soon!

RP 5w-30 here. I love the stuff! I'm surprised Royal Purple is not on the list, considering its specs and performance sends Mobil1 packing. Oh well.

I'm surprised Amsoil is not on the list either ... they definitely send Mobil 1 packing ....and they are the "Original Full Synthetic"

I've used Amsoil in all my cars over the last 10 years .... nothing but great results ....

They don't have a 0w40 though, so I'll either use the 0w30 or the 5w40 European formula .....

Some oil companies like Amsoil and RPI have not paid the big bucks for the privilege of having official testing and approval for (for example) MB229.5 It doesn't mean they do not meet or exceed the performance specs of the engine mfgr.

So you will find "official" and "unofficial" lists - or claims - that might include Amsoil Fully Sunthetic 5W40 European or Royal Purple's brand new EU 0W40 on one list and not on another.

Hardly confusing at all, is it?
