Shift Control Module issues

Recently got the "3 bars of death" on the dashboard of my 2008 451 Smart and the car wouldn't turn over. Put my meter on it and got a U0103 "Lost communication with the Shift Control Module". I replaced the module by following the procedure outlined in AllData.com's manual. Once completed, it now starts. Problem is that I can't get it to shift into any gear. The dash reads that the car is in neutral (or sometimes in "1") while the shifter is in the park position and I can't get the shifter to move through the gear positions. I can feel the parking lock release but the shifter will not move into the other gear positions. Yes, I did remove the transport lock after installation. No, I can't teach-in the transmission module because I can't physically move the shifter. The car has 110k miles on it. Any ideas besides taking it to the dealer?

Thanks
Chuck

Chuck R. On the shifter release yellow lever, Key must be ON, and car not on an incline.

Try getting a friend or two to rock the car forward and back while attempting to release the lever. A2Jack

No need to move shifter ???

Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia

US Style (Fake Auto) Transmission

Place the gear lever into the P (park) position,
Turn off the engine and wait at least 30 seconds,
Press the brake pedal,
Start the car (jump start if required),
Wait for the transmission to complete the teach-in process,
When complete, the ≡ should change to N,
Drive the car away.

The teach in process can take 30+ seconds so sit patiently.
