Slow to Accelerate from Stop

Is anyone finding that you are left in the dust when the light turns green? I can't start out at the speed I usually do with my other car and if I hit the gas pedal too hard, the engine revs up to 4000 rpms and I need to completely take my foot off the gas and let the engine "settle" before slowly accelerating. It has become a nuisance driving and I wonder if it's me. I drive only in automatic. In fact, I try to stay in the right "slow" lane behind another car that lags once the light goes green. There is absolutely no problem once I'm at 40 mph... then the car will cruise smoothly and I can go at a pretty quick clip (non-hwy). Expressways are no problem either. It is just every time I go to a full stop, I have to accelerate in increments and it takes a while.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

That's not the case with my smart. I'm usually out front at a light. I don't mash the gas but do run it down 50 - 70% for a quick get away.
It sounds as if your clutch is engaging too slowly at take- off or slipping.
I'm sure others here will help but I think a call to the dealer may be in order.

Oh, sounds like your clutch is slipping!

Something sounds funky. Definitely get it checked out. I think mine is very sprightly in the city speeds and has never been left lagging.

Give it a few days, find an empty lot accelerate briskly from a stop a number of times. If you don't see a change right away call your dealer. Clear commands let it figure out what to do, let it do it.
good luck karl

Mine has great pickup from a dead stop. Surprised many other drivers so far.
