Oil and Oil Filter should be replaced between 7,000 and 10,000 miles with the Synthetic oil. The closer before 10K the better.

The length of your filter looks like it cause it to extend below the bottom of the engine leaving it open to impact. Is this an acceptable idea?
Just wondering,

Here's how it compares to a couple of other filters for the smart (sorry, no stock filter to include):

The Mobil 1 filter is the closest to stock, and it's still about 3/8" longer than stock. I've used both the Mobil 1 and Bosch, both seem to work fine, and they are both high rated filters. The Bosch is about half the price though.

Both the Bosch 3300 and the Purolator PL14612 are 2-15/16" long, exactly one inch longer than the OEM. Just re-measuring to verify an earlier finding, my PL14612 has 1/16" more ground clearance than the bottom of the oil drain plug casting. The 3300 will be the same.

You will find that hitting the lower cast aluminum sump will be a lot more significant and dramatic than hitting the filter canister.

The PL14612 and 3300 are the longest filters that I know of that have been listed by their respective manufacturers for the 999cc smart.

I would not worry about clearance unless I the car is driven trough deep rutted country roads or trails. Doubt any one here drives in that environment.
