I could be wrong, but that looks like a timing chain in the picture. Doesn't answer the zero-clearance question, but hopefully makes zero-clearance less of an issue.
The chain appears to be a duplex, so that helps. Not that the pins are necessarily any bigger in diameter but the load is spread more evenly, as is the wear on the sprockets.
