Smart manual says use 91 octane

Since 91 octane seems hard to find at some gas stations is their any problem in pumping a 50/50 mixture of 89 and 93 octane?. Certainly a pain in the neck but I can't find too much harm in doing this. Thoughts??

Premium gas is recommended, but not required. If you decide to use a lesser octane, you won't get the gas mileage or preformace you would with Premium.

I would use premium, however that is formulated for your location. Here in Colorado, because of the altitude, premium is 91 octane, but most places it's 93 or 95.

You certainly won't do any harm by using the 93 on its own.

I found 92 but have noticed that fuel mileage is not as good, put in the .40cents extra for the 10 mile miles you'll be getting

Yes, you can. I have done it occassionally with the Outback which is optimized for 91. It can be a pain to mix at the pump, so I only do it if I have a half tank of full 93 already in, and top off with 89. And I can only do that every third time, otherwise I would have less than 91. At the approach of hurricane season I do stock 16 gallons of 50/50 91 in case I need gas for the generator or chainsaw, and if the weather people get it wrong like the past two years, I just dump it in the car before it gets too old.

For whatever reason, the Euro instructions call for 95 RON and 85 MON, which equates to US 90 pump octane (PON).
