Smart wont start security code issue

Help!! My Key battery went dead and when I replaced it and try to open the door the lights just flash 9 times. The car wont start as it obviously is in some type of security mode. Can anyone tell me how to reset it?

Are you sure you have the battery's polarity right (+/-)? Just a thought.

What year? try another new battery in the remote, or disconect the battery under the carpet on right side for a few minutes,or 2nd key if you have one! or to the dealer if its an 08 or 09 if the new battery trick don't do it..

Did you check the second fob?
Because, if a fob is pocket or purse held and the buttons are pressed inadvertently and repeatedly, the code will eventually get lost. After 128 or 256 unconnected press (that's without a handshake with the car), the code is lost and the fob requires to be reprogrammed. At least that's what was posted sometime last year...
But again, you say that your Dealer is clueless.

Yes, my dealer (who is a large Smart Dealer) has never encountered this particular problem and he is unable to get my car started.

The owners manual says that's the sign of a bad key fob battery; any chance the replacements used are bad also?

Nope, I bought several batteries and tried them all...then tested them at Radio Shack...but thank you for the suggestion. I can read where others have had a similar problem in the forum discussions, but I have not seen anyone have a solution...
