I think that the "reserve" starts when your gauge hits 1.0. I have repeatedly run my tank down to 0.0 and it usually takes 8.5 when I do this. Recently there was one exception where I ran to 0.0 and then drove another 10 miles or so. I filled the tank with 8.9, but I question the accuracy of the pumps at the particular station I was at. I don't go there often, but every time I do, it always shows that it fills a little more that I think it should actually be.

So yes, the 1.3 reserve is a part of the 8.7 gallon tank. The service manager at my dealership has confirmed this as well, and I tend to trust him.

Ok. I didnt believe the story about the 10 gal tank either. That is till the other day I get in the smart and realize that the fuel guage is completely gone (no bars) and the guage said 0 miles. My wife NEVER looks at the gas guage. I had been sick for over a week and havent driven the car for a while. I went straight to the Brand name station, because of fear of pushing and put the handle on the slowest notch and it finally clicked off at 9.7 gallons. Now I wonder???

I also ran mine to 0.0 and put 8.5 gal in. so I have .2 gal left when 0.0 shows. I try to fill way before that anyway

Been there - I filled to 9.5 gallons on the slowest setting after driving a few miles beyond 0.0. But, I can believe that the filler neck could hold a good quantity of gas, especially since the tank is in the middle of the car.

Do NOT superfill a gasoline car! You are asking for trouble.
