Yes, use the spare key until you can get the battery replaced.

Ok,

So if I'm not travelling with my two keys and my battery stop working, when I'm far of everything, I'm a bit stuck...

Better have replacement batteries in the car!

So a 'low' or 'dead' battery in your key can keep you from STARTING your smart? I just thought that it was for the 'keyless entry/alarm' functions.

The key doesn't have a chip in it for theft deterent? I'm shocked if that is correct.....

I took one of my keys apart so it would not be as cumbersome on my keychain, and every now and then the dash shows a key icon instead of
the P. It definitely needs the battery in the key to start the car, and it won't even start if the key fob is not right next to the ignition.

Hummmmm, it must be similar to the Mopar deal they have now. On some models (the new Challenger R/T for instance), you have a 'start' button on the dash in place of an ignition lock cylinder, but you must have the 'key fob' either IN THE CAR or JUST OUTSIDE of it to start the car. I haven't tried it on one to see if you can start the car with the key fob in your pocket and then get out and walk away. I wonder if the car will stop running......

Perhaps the same deal with smart? It would make sense, since Daimler owned both smart AND Chrysler at the time they were introduced....

What would be WAY COOL would be to remove the ignition lock cylinder on my smart and install a "Start" button!!!! or maybe in this case, a "SMART" button......

The "immobilizer" reads the key fob

The car almost starts like a start button. You don't have to hold it in the crank position untill it starts. I usualy Stick in the key, wait 1 second, turn it to start and let go. Im usualy putting on my seatbelt while it cranks over.

Funny thing about those start buttons. My neighbor has a Prius. The family took Mom to work one morning. Mom gets out at work (with the key) and they drive to wally world. They then realize they don't have a key to restart the car.
