I heard back from smart San Jose (although I won't be able to get my car until tomorrow).

They lubed the shifter knob, and that is all. My dealer told me "sometimes" the knob is cracked and must be replaced, but mine wasn't.

I read on the other thread that smart has been replacing shifters because the lube wasn't necessarily doing the job. I can't help but wonder if I'll have this problem again. but now I know the work around (pull the knob clean off).

As an aside, they wouldn't/couldn't flash my tranny. I'll post about that on this thread...

Sticky or stuck shifter

Notice just in the last week that the shifter was harder and harder to get in an out of "park". Read this post and used my hand and turned counter clockwise on the shaft between the shifter knob and the center console. It turned about 1/8th of a turn and the knob then lifted directly off. This was done in the Park position and also will work in any other position if needed. Sprayed some silicone lube in the knob and down the shaft where the white plunger is. Moved it up and down a few times then reinserted the knob back on the top. Turned the shaft clockwise back and locked in place. No problems anymore and will call to cancel the tow truck.

WD40 does it...you can hear the trans lock disengage with the brake pedal, but the lever on the ****er didnt budge. a couple shot of wd40 and it was free....probably just dirt and grime build up inside...seemed like a bigger issue and headache.but its not..
