Tire Pressure and Oil Question

I was told the other day that someone had upped their tire pressure to 40psi and was getting a better ride... has anyone else gone this route and if so, is there any safety issues and has the ride infact gotten any better.

I searched the forum but can't find a specific answer for this one. I'm planning on doing my own oil change and have 3 specific questions.

A. Can you get the oil filter at any local auto parts store or do I have to get it from the dealership?

B. I live in central florida. What exact oil weight should I be using? I know it varies depending on where you live.

C. Can you change the oil with the car on all fours or should you jack it up on a specific side to help drain the oil?

Thanks for the specific answers!!

I don't have specific knowledge about a better ride with 40psi, but it doesn't sound at all right. It likely will be worse. Try it.

Use the search function again. There are tons of posts on filters and oil changing and that should keep you busy all day reading.

You should set your tire pressures to the settings listed in your door jam. Running them higher actually causes them to wear unevenly AND reduces them contact patch on the road reducing braking.

You can change oil and oil filter while the vehicle is still on the ground (just changed it Monday with 1,530 miles on the clock). The Mobile 108 filter will also work just fine...I used Mobile 1 5w-20 oil here in Tallahassee...Good luck!!!

Hi Wdhitch That was me but I think you may have misunderstood. I said you can "feel" the road. Every little bump you do feel when you jack up the pressure and it does handle better as far as the road sway but this is my opinion though I am very accustomed to driving extremely small cars. Factory setting does give a better ride but "I" like to feel the road. Also, my tires have always worn better by having them overinflated. Once again, that's just me so take it for what its worth - just saying from my real world experience. I hope that helped out.

I used 5W-30 Amsoil in mine. Oil weights seem to be Smarts big secret here in the US - what kind of owners manual doesn't have oil weights? For once one piece of info that I would of actually used that was recommended by the factory.

Oh, and it is a hypermiler tip - increasing the pressure I mean.

I had just the opposite with increased tire pressure the car was extremely nervous and require extra attention while driving. Drop back to recommended and problem went away. YMMV.... It's easy to check for yourself if it works for fine if not easy to let some air out!

You will be pleased to hear the latest new oil filter info at:

http://**********.com/forums/index.php/topic,259.0.html

and re tire pressure, what I do that works well is:

http://**********.com/forums/index.php/topic,180.0.html

Keep in mind, you probably should not go over recommended pressures by more than 4 lbs. max (replied a smart service rep on the subject), which could affect your tire pressure sensors, and/or puncture proness, tire life, etc.

Also, keep in mind, your recommended front and rear tire pressures are substantially different, so, check your door jam for base rec. pressure levels, before adjusting slightly higher, if you choose to do so.
