NO offense intended: "One person's; "Blah blah" is another's; "Ah hah".

I found the explanation adequate but, for only the shifting via motor operation.

If a doctor explained how a valve in your heart worked, that would not suffice to explain how the heart works.

There's plenty of detail on the actual shifting of the gears to be found in the Technical Guide. I figured this would suffice for most people; my level of interest in this stuff is about the same as for a microwave - just show me the on/off switch.

I don't understand why my pin won't always engage in the locking groove of the selector drum? It seems at slow speeds my transmission sometimes fails to maintain the selected gear as though it can't make up it's mind to upshift or down shift (in automatic mode). This causes the car to really kick until it can pick the right gear. What's up with that?

I think it is because you go past a certain speed and it shifts up....then you fall below that speed and it shifts back down. I've noticed it when driving out of the driveway at work at speeds below 20...it will shift back and forth between 1st and 2nd until I get to the end, shifting up between speed bumps and then down at the bump.
I've also found that if you are in traffic and think you should be in 5th going downhill at 45mph, it is only in 4th and will not shift into 5th unless you do it manually. That's because it won't go into 5th until you are nearly at 50mph or at least that is the way I have taught my trans to shift.
