My understanding of the rev limiter is that it just halts the throttle, (ignores any further pressure) and applies the brakes lightly. at least that's what it does when I hit 92 the other day. Really smooth... just sat there and would not go further. Didn't bump like it does with most other cars that cut off the fuel when the limiter kicks in.

If you are in manual, before you hit redline, the car will upshift for you. It's not a normal fuel/timing cutoff like any other rev limiter I've experienced. It does make easier when merging onto a highway though, just floor it and steer.

I think I have experienced what konati is talking about. If you hit "passing" gear and you then let off on the gas, you would expect the tranny to upshift, but doesn't. When you press down on the gas again, you're still in the lower gear.

This trans does not have a "lift throttle upshift" feature like an automatic. Seems to be entirely throttle position and speed sensor driven.

OK car has 3000 miles strictly commute type driving. For the first time I needed to merge onto a freeway and at about 20mph in drive I floored the gas. It shifted into a lower what I refer to as a passing gear, and stayed there, so if I didn't lift bad things would have happend.
So, my other car a Silverado, when I merge I. floor the gas it drop down but without my lifting off the gas hits max RPM and shifts itself to lower the RPM.
My smart did not do this is that normal.

I'm not sure but I think there's a button under the pedal to signal "kickdown" as in give-me-full-power-now.

If I activate kickdown by pressing the pedal to the floor (even if I release it to half throttle right after), it will stay in the lower gear for a while until I release gas completely for a few seconds or crest a hill and start going down. I think that's programming and by design. Not always desirable, so I kick it over to manual and upshift if I don't like its choice. I figure I asked for the lower gear and it's gonna give it to me until I say otherwise. First manual override was the kickdown switch, which I think requires another manual override. Maybe the decision making could be improved in auto mode.

my car will upshift when I lift off on the throttle, It will also shift to a higher gear when it gets to redline. Have not found the limiter yet. This is for my car "normal". Hope that helps
