Turn Signal / Flasher Problem

My 451 developed a fast click on left turn signal.
I noticed both the Left Front and Left Side turn signals were dead.
Bulbs were good.

It turns out there is a relay for the Front & Side turn signals.
Relays are located towards rear of the fuse box, under the dash.
Left Front/Side Relay was bad.

I just figured the next person with this problem might find this info helpful.

Now I have to try to buy a relay from a local auto parts store.

Yes, I could just go back to dealer under warranty, but it's way too much hassle to drop my car off, and leave it there for a day or two, for such a simple fix.

Why would you need to leave your car at the dealer for days to replace a relay?

Couldn't you just drop by the dealer and pick one up?

BTW: Thanks for the great info

Turn Signals work again

$9.99 got me a relay from Kragen.
Niehoff RL35451

Not an exact equivalent (no coil resistor), but it works perfectly.

It's hard to believe the dealer wants $50 for the original:
Tyco/Hella A 002 542 13 19 (26)
(This relay also serves duty as a Fuel Pump relay in some Mercedes.)

The equivalent Bosch Relay is 0 332 019 103
This also has a resistor, across the coil, like the dealer relay.
It's 50A rated and only $6.99.

Tyco relays, Bosch, power relay,75 amp,high capacity,Automotive,truck,equipment,

http://http://bowery.com/maserati/home/files/bosch%20relays.pdf
(pg 8 & 9)

I'll pick up 2 of these and change both out.
It's hard to pass on such a good deal.

So if one of you ever needs a Turn Signal Relay, and can't find one, I'll have some spares I can send your way.

Does anyone know if these relays will work on a Smart ForTwo 450?

I am having a problem with the passenger-front turn signal. It doesn't blink for hazards but does come on for the parking and headlights.

I believe turn signals in the 450 are controlled by relays inside a sealed "SAM" unit. As such they are not independently replaceable; the entire SAM must be swapped out.

Most usual suspect for your symptoms is a dodgy light bulb or loose connection.

Sunny,

Thanks for the tip! I thought it might be a dodgy light bulb so I replaced it. For two right turns it worked fine but then stopped blinking after that. I imagine the bulb may have come loose or that the contacts need a cleaning.

Lunarx,

Thanks for posting this info along with the vendor part number and links. Mine developed the identical problem. Ordered 2 relays to resolve.

Found the Bosch relay at pcsconnectors.com (2011)

Hard to find, but they are at least in the US in Connecticut.

Be informed this queer car's COMPUTER runs the turn signals, not a blinker. This is important as there is a driver transistor, probably on some IC, that drives that relay on and off. To proove this, leave your seat belt off and drive the car until it starts beeping. While it's beeping, put a turn signal on. Notice there is no turn signal blinker audio while the computer is beeping at you. The turn signal sound is an audio playing like a ringtone on your sellphone.

That resistor is very important. It absorbs the inductive kick every time the transistor shuts off the current to the coil, much like the high voltage kick of an ignition coil, disappating the kick as heat, protecting the transistor in the IC from the kick voltage. I'm amazed it hasn't destroyed it already. Coils oppose changing the current going through them. "Inductive Kick"

How much to replace the main computer when that transistor fails?.....OUCH!
