The Canadian smart has a 4 year warranty but it also cost a few grand more than the same car this side of the border. It seems everything comes at a cost.

Until recently, the Canadian $ was worth only 80% of a US$, so the price really wasn't more. Now, of course, it is.

The 451 will be available any day now in Canada so "now" is what counts. I beleive the cost of the 451 is actually less than the 450 in Canada. The 450 was a diesel so that did add a few dollars.

They were still selling 450s in Canada this year?

Selling 450s in Canada This Year

Yes! Canada was loaded with 450 CDI inventory to cover the lack of any '07s until the '08s became available.

2/24 is the standard warranty on the USA smarts. Extended smart warranties including optional roadside assistance "smart 1" powered by Penske rental, and maintenance options available. All a part of customizing your car. Don't need 3-4-5 years? Why pay for them?

I like the idea that (was it Suzuki?) your warranty is transferable if you sell the car. To me that sounds like a better idea.

Your warranty is transferable on any car sold in the USA as long as it's still in effect. Good selling point; bad idea if smart really does go ahead with the 2 year warranty (no info on the official site that I can see.)

Also, the idea that warranty length is tied to vehicle cost doesn't hold up. When GM went to the 5 year warranty they didn't raise prices to cover the increased warranty period.

My area Dealer confirmed that the warranty will be 2 years 24K miles... This is the same warranty they provide in Europe. This will change some prospective buyers' minds!

Did they have an idea what the upgrade to three years would cost?
