Can't hurt and I use the rule..."if you don't ask, the answer is always NO!"

Great idea; so far, other than the confirmation e-mail and the answer to an e-mail query on the warranty ("not decided yet") I've had zero communication from smart usa. My vote is we e-mail them and state our positions on the rumored 2 year warranty (positive or negative) - give them feedback whether they want it or not.

The more I think about it , the more it bothers me. I know of no other car available today that has such a short warranty. 30 years ago when the typical car buyer traded in every other year, and the cars were guaranteed to fall apart after 50,000 miles, that was the norm. But we are in a new era, and even though the car is inexpensive, it is inappropriate for it's manufacturer to classify it as disposable. I have an '90 GMC pickup and my wife has an '89 Acura. At 150,000 miles each, the handling is getting a bit loose and should probably be replaced. And yes, I bought an extended warranty for the '02 MINI, but that was to take the factory warranty from 4 years out to eight. The fancy electronics were failing all the time, and it was the first car ever for which I felt compelled to by an extended warranty. The one time I had a 2 year warranty ('74 Mustang II) , the whole thing fell apart in month 25. No extended warranties available then. If the manufacturer doesn't have confidence in the Smart, maybe I shouldn't have either. This is a big issue.

I just think the 2 year waranty is PAG's reaction to the decline of the dollar versus the euro. They have to be hurting with this steep decline and trying to find ways to make up the significant loss. A trial balloon perhaps?

Warranty Work - Loaner Vehicle

Recently my 2009 Smart Car "shut down" at a red light for no explicable reason and would not restart. I called the "Smart Car Emergency Center" and they responded by sending a tow truck to take the vehicle to the nearest Smart Dealership "free of charge". The mechanic called me the next day to inform me that something "broke" within the engine (he told me what is was i just cant recall it right now) and it would need to be replaced. He mentioned it was fully covered under the warranty, however it would take at least 3 weeks for the broken part to arrive. I asked him about the chance of attaining a "loaner car" while i waited but he said that was not covered under the warranty. As all my warranty documentation is inside of the car currently and i have no access to it. Can someone please tell me if such a situation calls for a loaner car to be issues to the owner while warranty work is being completed. Thanks.

If the Car just "Broke" and it will take 3 weeks (about 1 car payment) to get it fixed, I think you need to speek with smart USA about a loaner. It is not the dealers responsibility. Call that 800 # you called when it broke and speek with them.

I don't beleve their is anything in the warranty about giving you wheels while yours is being fixed, but smart usa may step up.
