Unfortunately. I'd like to see us follow Canada's lead on this...

Substitute "Preventing your" for "I think" and we're in agreement.

I just turn on my headlights when I drive. Saves me the $$ but just doing it myself. How hard is it to turn the arm to turn them on. If you really want to be seen. Just a thought. If they are not already done by the factory for free, then heck with it.

Where is the line?

I am not anti-safety. It's just that every now and then someone comes up with some other way to "Make Us Safer".
But what is the real worth of all of this EXTRA stuff, like the third tail light. At first, I am sure the third tail light reduced accidents, but after a while, everyone ignores them like the other 2. Then comes DRLs, so now we are all driving around with our lights on 24 hours a day. We soon learn to ignore those too. You have to draw the line somewhere, then they move the line again.
What's next . . . strobe lights on the side mirrors, or rotating beacons on the roof, sounding our horns every 15 seconds to warn pedestrians that we are coming down the road.
Sure, these things might make us SAFER, but at what cost and for how long until we learn to ignore these too?

DRIVING IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT. PAY ATTENTION!!!!!

Then we wouldn't need all of these arbitrary things added to our cars just so some politician or engineer can justify his job.

Yeah, I think smart sort of fibbed by calling these DRLs. They aren't in the accepted sense, because the rear lights are on as well. However, the instrument panel and shifter lighting is not on, so it's not the same as using the light switch. Somewhere in between.

Two questions to the group

1-if everyone is running DRLs who's going to be paying attention to the car with DRLs?

2-most of the studies for the efficacy of DRL are not done in areas such as SoCal or PSprings. How effective are DRL's where you have 300+ days a year of sunshine? [Long Beach averages 308 btw ]

Feel free to discuss among yourselves...I am merely asking the questions.

It's a bit strange - it seems to be a common trait with MB brand products (but not MB itself). The Freightliner Sprinter's lights work the same when in DRL mode.
