What, no poll?

Could be the brake wear sensor noise, assuming it's possible to wear the brakes that much in 20K miles.

Most disc brakes come with a piece of sheet metal that makes such a noise to alert you to nearly worn out brake pad. The piece of sheet metal is bent to where it will touch, and grind before the pad wears out to warn you before the disc is damaged. Many time you can have a lot more pad left, like a couple of years worth, but you should take a peek, and see how much pad is left.

Do not trust the technician to tell you the real deal, look for yourself, the tech work on a commission.
You can easily take off the tire, and check the pads yourself, and save yourself some money.

My money's on the small pebble. Either caught in the rear dust shield or along the leading edge of the caliper.

OK, GG, not to derail your thread, but speaking of brake noises.... My smart front brakes squeak when it rains. I don't mean when I've been driving in the rain, but I can park all day long and when it rains pretty good, I get in the car to go home the brakes squeak and stick!

Anyway glad you problem was temporary.

The stock pads aren't very good IMHO. They stick to the rotors
after driving in the rain and also produce copious amounts of black brake
dust. I switched to black EBC Ultimax pads at 5,000 km and have never regretted
the decision. They produce more dust than the EBC Greenstuff pads but far
less than the OEM versions...

Brake discs are made of cast iron, they can flash rust in a matter of minutes. When you first apply the brakes, this can cause a squeal or rough grinding noise. They can actually rust worse under the pad, which can cause your sticking issue.
