My car has almost 4500 miles and I'm planning on hanging oil at 5000. (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know!) Was going to have the dealer do it and maybe the trans update but waiting til I get a letter or know for sure they are doing it. Figure i'll just change the oil myself. That way I can send a sample to Blackstone to see how things are in there. Where is the best (cheapest!) place to get a smart filter? Would prefer its an actual smart filter.
By the time you add in the cost of shipping from an online vendor, your best bet is just to pick one up at your local smart centre, unless you're buying in bulk (in which case the shipping would be less of an issue).
The OEM filter is actually a Toyko Roki/Mitsubushi 1230A040. It is a very well made filter, though I don’t know much about its filtering capability or capacity. If you are not conveniently located to a smart center, an identical clone of the OEM is the T.R./Yamaha 5DM-13440-00, available where Yamaha scooters and ATVs are sold.
Otherwise, you can buy at most car parts places locally the Mobil 1 M1-108 (this filter was benchmarked against the OEM and is catalogued by Mobil for the smart 999cc gasser). The M1-108 is considerably cheaper than the OEM or Yamaha. Purolator has also benchmarked the OEM, and lists the (better) PremiumPlus L14612 and (best) PureOne PL14612 for the smart. Bosch, using the same data as Purolator (same company), lists their FILTEC 3300. The PL14612 is consistently evaluated as the best of the lot. Like the Mobil 1, the Purolator/Bosch filters are cheaper than the OEM. Dana/Wix is tentatively going to list the Wix 57040, but it is not yet catalogued – when it is, it will also be sold by NAPA with the last three digits “040.”
I was hoping to find an online source for the filter. I'm about 75 miles from the dealer. If I would drive there, I'd just have them do the oil change. Still might I guess if I cant find the filter without paying $10 shipping!. Have to give them a call and see what the price is for just the oil change

So what you're saying is that your smart center wants $10 for shipping? Pretty much anything you buy 'online' will have shipping, and depending on 'where' it's shipped from, may end up being a lot more than $10.
Premium gas around here is $1.93 (what I paid earlier in the week for 93 octane at BP) SO 'if' you're getting 36-38mpgs, then the cost for you to drive there and back would be about $8.00. To save your time, just have them ship it to you and get it done locally.

Ask them if they have a 5DM-13440-00 filter in stock. It is identical to the OEM smart/Mitsu filter and costs about the same or maybe a little less (the Mobil 1s, Purolators, and Boschs are a lot less).
Got the Bosch 3300 at Schucks, on sale, for less than $4 ea. Bought a handful because they'll get used. Have seen the Mobile 1s for a similar price. These are both at least as good as the massively overpriced filter at the dealer.

Wasn't there concern raised a while back that all of the aftermarket replacement filters were longer than the stock filter by varying degrees? Since the filter is one of the lowest hanging parts on the engine, I recall that some people were worried that the longer filters could be a problem.
