It would be nice to have something to hold and read when one is not online. Plus one could insert Smart car cartoons in it like the other For Dummies books.
So I take it from the lack of "here it is" reponses that there is no repair manual out there for us to purchase yet. I had heard of a CD from Mercedes Benz (not the one on ebay) but I was not sure it was worth buying. Plus I think it had all the MB models on it. Any word on that?
So, I emailed Haynes to ask them about if they were going to start doing a Smart 42 manual, and here is the response I got today.
Quote:
Dear Sir:
Thank you for your inquiry. We appreciate all correspondence from our customers, since it helps us produce the finest do-it-yourself manuals available.
Because of the extensive time and cost necessary to produce one of our manuals, it is not financially feasible to produce a manual for every model; we must base our decision on vehicle sales volume. Unfortunately, your vehicle model has not yet met the sales threshold or demand necessary for us to begin work on a manual. We hope we will be able to produce a manual for your vehicle in the future, and we will do so as soon as it is feasible.
Again, thank you for your interest in Haynes automotive/motorcycle manuals!
Best regards,
Technical Research
To me, that is quite funny. I am wondering what kind of numbers they are looking at before they tear a car apart. I told them that last year was over 25k and this year is going to be upwards of 40k. Sheesh.
One wonders if they take into account the Primary English-speaking smart world as a whole (Can, UK, Irl, SAf, Aus, NZ, US) and the million-or-so smarts built to date, many in the hands of those others adept in English as a second language.
"We are in the process of creating a separate website for each smart owner’s vehicle. The site will contain links to our service manual and emission component information for individuals or service shops to use in servicing a smart fortwo.
We are programming the site right now and expect to have it on the Web by the end of March."
Pricing has not been set yet but that information should be available in the next several weeks.

No big loss; Haynes/Clymer/Chilton manuals are utter rubbish, compared to the Bentley books. I've found more errors in Brand H and Brand C books over the years...
FWIW I've also contacted Bentley regarding publishing a 451 manual. Fingers crossed...

Rigger. Yes I agree Bentley is best, but always high cost. For the average car owner Haynes is good enough at around $14 - $18. I would however, pop for the Bentley...If there were one on the market today. A2Jack.
The ebay CD covers both the 450 and 451 models and does cover a great number of different subjects. I think it is a very worthwhile purchase. We provide one free with to all of our owners as one of our assist tools. Many of the procedures come directly from the Evilution site, but the CD does list the items in a fashion that some may find easier to use. The permission from Evilution to use his information on the CD was somewhat cloudy, but I think Evil finally gave at least a temporary approval. I think Evil was going to come out with his own CD at a much lower price at one point, but it may have become too high a time investment. For the price, I think you will find it very worthwhile However, if you agree, you ought to send Evil some money too. He's not getting anything from the CD that I know of.
