I just sent an e-mail to Smart asking the official recommendation. We'll see what they say in a bit. I also asked for the torque spec on the drain plug since SCSD doesn't seem to be able to call me back.

Englewood smart center told me only to use 5w40 full synthetic.
Looks to me that everybody got a different answer.

Here is out of the owners manual: = contact your smart center, thats alot of help.

Engine oils
Engine oils are specifically tested for their
suitability in our engines and durability for
our service intervals. Therefore, only use
engine oils and oil filters required for vehi
cles with Maintenance System. For a listing of
approved engine oils and oil filters contact an
authorized smart center.
! Using engine oils and oil filters of specifi
cation other than those expressly required
for the Maintenance System, or changing of oil
and oil filter at change intervals longer than
those called for by the Maintenance System
will result in engine or emission control
system damage not covered by the smart
Limited Warranty.
Please follow Maintenance System recommen
dations for scheduled oil changes. Failure to
do so will result in engine or emission control
system damage not covered by the smart
Limited Warranty.
Engine oil additives
! Do not blend oil additives with engine oil.
They may damage the engine.
Damage or malfunctions resulting from
blending oil additives are not covered by the
smart Limited Warranty. Any authorized smart
center will provide you with additional infor
mation.

smart cars use mb spec oil that have to be compliant with sheet 229.5
that is direct from mb in their service guide. either people arent sure and just giving a number or are using the wrong fluid.
the portland center is using 0w40 mobil one that is on the speck sheet.
this isnt the most current but its close.....[http://www.varadar.com/coppermine/al...020/MB_229.pdf

Drain plug torque

Just in from Udo ... the torque for the oil drain plug is 65 Nm ... which is about 47.9 lb-ft. He has a couple pages for me on the oil change so I'm going over there in a minute to go get them.

Are you sure the value is 65 Newton-meters? 48 foot-pounds seems to be excessive torque for an oil drain plug.
