Won't start...

Just picked up the car yesterday and drove it home (132 miles). This morning I took off the positive battery cable to place a red "felt" battery washer over the battery post. Then reattached the positive battery cable. Next I took off the negitive battery cable to place a green "felt" battery washer over that that battery post. Then reattached the negitive battery cable. Afterwards I sprayed both battery posts with CRC battery protectant (a red spray-on coating to also help prevent battery corrision). Later on this afternoon we tried to leave in the smart to visit the mother-in-law for dinner. The car dash lights came on but the car would not "turn-over" to start the engine. Does the computer need to be rebooted or something like that? Would really appreciate any help here...please. Right now, I really look stupid in the wife's eyes (it's her car at that)!!! Thanks guys (or ladies too).

See pages 273 - 275 in the owner's manual. Key should not be in the ignition when removing/replacing the battery. Other than that, call your dealer service guys and see if they have a clue. Let us know how it works out.

Thanks JWright...

That was probably the first mistake, yes the key was in the ignition. After reading some posts in the archived files about starting problems, we noticed that we had the "three bars" instead of the "P" symbol. After "reteaching" the computer where Park actually was, it started right up, thank God (wife was very happy). Again, thanks for your information and this site. One note here folks, I had called smart roadside service to possibly get any sugestions for a "quick fix" and our feelings was that they were more interested in writting up a service ticket to have someone come to me (kept in mind that our nearest smart center is Jacksonville, 135 miles away one way). Why the gentleman wasn't interested in trying to possibly troubleshoot our problem with us definitely has me concerned about smart's service. This could of possibly been a very expensive "repair" for us if they said that unhooking the battery was my fault. So far, I have not been very impressed with smart's customer service...tried to get information about the delivery of our car and in my opinion, a three month window was a piss-poor example of a time deadline. Oh well, at least now she has her car and has been very happy in the short time experince with it...it is definetly a crowd magnet.

Let's not forget that we are all (service people included) in a learning stage...

Keep in mind that the rep you spoke to was in a dispatch-type call center. They are hired and trained to co-ordinate resources, not be on demand, remote control mechanics or technicians. Glad you got your problem solved.

Disconnecting battery a blessing

Nicolas:

Tell your wife you were accomplishing TWO things by disconnecting the battery;

1. Sealing the gaseous escape around each post.

2. Recycling her precious baby's Virginity via virtual hypnotism. By disconnecting the battery you erased from memory all the 'rough and cruel driving the bad people did from the factory up until you took delivery.

Seriously, you will find the shifting and responce (both automatic and manual) smooth and learning her discernment.

REMEMBER, YOU DID THIS FOR HER.

Thanks, now that did make me feel better (but not quite as much as when I "retaught" the computer where Park actually was and the darn thing started). LOL;)
