Zee and Key swapping (450 model)

Hi, can anyone tell me with any kind of certainty what happens if I take the zee unit and the key/receiver mechanism out of one smart and put them into another. Will it work?

The reason I ask is that inmy otherwise fine smart car, the zee unit has failed, I have another with a blown engine and I want to take the zee out of it.
