Another HyperMile attempt with my 450

Evening All

I'm looking to see if I can achieve better results than I did here The Final Chapter Has Begun , and a detailed record of my fuelings for the last year + Details: Smart - Fortwo - Passion

I've mapped out a new course (love Google Earth) and this should allow me to avoid 2 long lights and 2 stop signs as well as knock off a mile in each direction.

Drove it for the first time this evening and it is back/community roads almost all the way with 30-35 mph limits.

There is a little twist this time though, I raised the tire pressure (front to 32 PSI +3, back to 35 +6), the air is cooler on this effort then the spring trip, and I will have to use my lights for a portion of the trip

DISCLAIMER: I do not endorse, encourage, nor will I defend, or debate this. Now that has been said, I added 1 Oz of acetone to my tank, I'm curious as heck.

I'll use the same trip computer I put together here Trip computer/real time recorder and if this test is like the last one it will be a few weeks before I go through this tank.

When the first blip goes out (some time next week) I'll give more precise details about the route difference (I took a wrong turn tonight so I don't have accurate mileage or time).

Let the boring ride begin

1st blip

Afternoon All

Well the first blip went sooner than expected @139 miles (165 last attempt), yet there are a few things that may of caused this.

1 day at work I had to drive to another division (30 highway miles) and 1 morning I was running late and used the highway (13 highway miles) and because of my trip (this past spring) to NY I know my 450 only gets 40 MPG at highway speeds.

Or it could be the use of the acetone, Or I didn't fill the tank as much this attempt, Or it could be the new route is has more hills, we know it's not the 2-5 extra PSI I put in the tires.

I find my 450 to very repeatable from blip to blip, where my 2nd blip (last attempt) went out after 90 miles, I'll have a better idea what my mileage is when my next blip goes out.

The new route is actually 1.2 miles shorter (from the highway route)in each direction and is only 8 min longer in each direction (last attempt 1 mile longer in each direction and extra 13 min longer in each direction).

So to conclude, nothing exciting yet and we can't draw any conclusions yet

Morning All

Well the 2nd blip went out @ 209 miles, it seem like this HyperMile effort is tanking.

A rough guess of my MPG (based on past attempts) is only in the high 40s and I’m wondering where I can place blame, yet this test is so different from my past effort.

I really want to point that finger at the acetone, yet the only way I can say that for sure is if I do the same course, in current conditions with out the acetone.

The cold mornings and having to use my lights is different in this attempt as well. OOHH a side note on HyperMileing and the cold weather. When HyperMileing one of the goals it not to put much of a load on the motor, low load equals to less loss, it also means no wasted energy, no wasted energy equals no HEAT that makes for a COLD ride to work in the mornings.

If my next blip goes out and the indications are still only saying the mid to upper 40s I’m going to give up on this tank and finish this tank using the highway. Because I have the acetone in my cross hairs I want to repeat this test ASAP (for weather conditions) using my new route with an untainted tank.

Afternoon all

3rd blip went at 280 miles, I'm running 45 miles behind last time, I'll be lucky if I can make it to 400 miles on this tank.

I'll run this tank dry and restart this test with out acetone, because of the season I figure I have about 4 week before I have to switch to the snow tires.

I'll only update with a final mileage and MPG, I post when I restart with a fresh tank

Well the final numbers are in

417 miles, 8.63 gallons = 48.3 mpg a full 8 MPG off from last try.

Even though I feel it is the acetone (this new tank was un-poisoned ) there are still a host of thing that could be contributing.

Hilly route, having to use head lights, those highway trips, etc. regardless, I will repeat the same route with this new tank and see if I am fairly blaming the acetone.

I'll just add to this thread rather than start another, see ya in about a week

Yes, ASM, Thanks for your posts. I was thinking of trying acetone myself, and I will hold off. My indicated mileage went down with more air in my tires, but maybe I am actually going farther with it, then indicated? I will have to compare trip to trip...
