Blinking Wrench

2005 Smart Passion (gray market car) I have a single blinking wrench with a mileage display on startup. I think it means I am due an oil change. How do I turn it off?

Try the Evilution website for resetting the maintenance warning light. http://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php...&men=servicing
Per Kane the author of the website, be sure to change the oil even if you turn off the warning
For some reason, I've had trouble making this work. Good luck!

You might check out the 450 section of this forum for more info on pre2007 smarts.

Keep trying. Kane's right

Took me about a six tries before I figured it out. As the Evilution site says, don't complain that the process doesn't work, because it always does. Just takes some practice to make it work. Don't give up.

Thanks, Ron, for the encouragement. Wasn't sure if it was smartie or me. Guess it's me. Will try again, again, again...

It's the same!
Anyway
Geez72 - don't just turn it off, get it serviced as well.

I just got the blinking wrench for the first time at just over 6000 miles, I started it up this morning, and it said -1 in the total milage, shortly after the 30 second whir noise stopped it cleared and showed my normal mileage and everything seemed normal again. So does this mean I'm due for an oil change even though its not quite 10,000 or a year?

I thought to myself hey my car is aging backwards like benjamin button with -1 mile on it!

Blinking Wrench

I believe that the blinking wrench is tied to not only the mileage, but also the elapsed time. Therefore, if it takes a good deal of time to reach the 10,000 mile mark, the wrench will show up anyway. On these cars that sat for a while prior to being sold, the wrench would blink even with only 2 miles on the car... that's how we figured out the time element factor.

I realize that the OP is talking about a 450, but for the sake of future searchers:

I'm on day 4 of the blinking wrench on my 451. It does keep counting up each day. Took it into the smart center today. The service guy told me it is indeed a time function as well as mileage. And if I had it serviced, it would be flashing again in 365 days, or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.

With 5,000 miles on the clock, and having changed the oil once already, I'm not interested in a $150 10,000 mile service just yet.

I've tried the instructions on evilutions site a half dozen times with no success yet. I was one of the first round of deliveries last January, so I suspect this is going to be a hot topic in the coming weeks, as the lower mileage cars start blinking on a time basis.
