No, it's the kind of service required. From the technical service manual:
Quote:
Meaning of wrench symbols:
• 1 wrench means Oil Service Plus
• 2 wrenches mean maintenance service

I've had my blinking wrenches for some time. Read 2 different ways to try to reset it, neither worked. I've learned to just live with it, car still functions fine with the blinking wrenches on startup......and no....I'm not mentally or physically handicapped so I am actually capable of reading and following directions even though it's fun to try something first without directions just to see how things turn out. What's the worst that can happen? (JUST KIDDING!)

FWIW, on like the 25th try, it finally worked for me (on a 451). It _is_ an exercise in frustration until you get it though.

I thought programming a chipped key in a Mazda was a lot of push this, hit the turn signal, spin 3 times clockwise under a full moon until the service light in a smart.

Maybe we're supposed to go to the stealership and for $149.00 they can wave their magic wand and it will dissappear before our very eyes.

wrenches = maintenance

Below is what I found a couple years ago when I first got my 2005 fortwo [aka 450]. As I understand it, one wrench means "A" service is required and two wrenches mean "B" service is required. The system uses time and mileage to calculate which is required. Any independent Mercedes garage w/ "Star" computer system should be able to reset, that's how I have had mine reset. If you are in Los Angeles area I recommend Stepke Imports independent Mercedes service in Mar Vista. Stepke Imports, your Mercedes Benz Repair Specialists!

Intervals
1st service A at 9,000 miles or 1 year (which ever sooner)
2nd service B at 18,000 miles or 2 years (which ever sooner)
3rd service A at 27,000 miles or 3 years (which ever sooner)
4th service C at 36,000 miles or 4 years (which ever sooner)

Thank you for posting the service checklists, belkin666

I get so tired of people complaining about smart's "overpriced oil change"...

I called Universal Smart today and told them what was going on, the service girl asked how many miles I had, and she said that was way to low. So I said, well can I come in and have you guys reset that? And she said yeah, but its New Years blah blah blah.. She ended up setting me up for an early appointment on NYE. She also said another customer came in with the same thing at 5000, she said the technician didn't feel she needed the "service" so early. So I guess he just reset it and sent her on her way.

Been there; done that ;) After you've done it a few times, it only takes one try and less than 15 seconds to do the reset.

I finally gave up. I tried both methods listed in the UK website countless times, but neither would work.
It has been one year since I've had the car, but it has only 5000 miles, so I guess I have to put up with the blinking wrench for another 5000 more miles when I bring it in for the first oil change. Oh well.
