It uses 1.4 pounds or two 12 oz cans of 134A. Remember the low pressure fitting is behind the right turn signal light. The high pressure line is real easy to get to when you remove the grill.

Also be sure to completely evacuate the A/C system before refilling. Not evacuating the system can allow too much compressor oil to get in, taking space away from the refrigerant. Less refrigerant means less cool-ness.

24-42 has used a different refrigerant than the regular 134a stuff. From what I've read, I'm going to switch over to it as soon as I can. Maybe he can chime in with both the name of it (I've forgotten!) and his experience.

What are you doing that requires this already? I have never touched the A/C on any car I've owned.

You evacuate to eliminate non-condensible gases and moisture. It also removes any refrigerant that may remain in the system so you can charge by volume, rather that pressure(Specific Charge).

Let us know how it goes!!

You guys are great, Thank you so much.
The car was parked for 9 months and for some reason the Freon escaped. I put 1.3 pounds before I read Leroy's post and it has been working fine.
Now, I have an engine light on, the code is P200B (Output Stage Component) it also said Purge Valve.
Any tips on how to repair this code. I had it erased before and it came back the next day. Also the idle is rough, it surges up and down.
Best Regards

What type of OBD-2 tester are you using? The code P200B is not a normal smart code that is used in the Mercedes STAR DAS. The Purge Valve code is a normal code that shows up on the G&K cars because of the modifications that was done to the fuel tank. Most of the time that code will pop up but it will not cause the check engine light to come on. The problem with the rough idle can be caused by the purge valve being stuck open and letting fuel into the engine at the wrong time. But you need to check some things to see if the charcoal canister is getting fuel in it. Pull off the hose that goes to the canister and see if there is fuel inside the canister. If there is any fuel in it will be bad. There is a fix for it but I would have to E-mail you the pictures to show you how it is done. You can also try to clean the Purge Valve by using carb cleaner to clean it out. If you look at the engine hose diagram picture next to the engine compartment it will show you where it is at. The engine will get too much fuel and make it idle rough it will also have a strange smell that will come out the exhaust. Sometimes it will look like a black smoke. If you are still having problems, PM me for my phone number.

The G&K cars have a differant OBD-2 system then the factory smart system so the engine codes are not the same. That is why there is a black box that G&K installs in the car.

Is there nothing you don't know about 450's, Leroy?

ricks auto, I read on Evilution that in the 450s, if one didn't use the A/C regularly, the charge was lost. It seems there is some sort of leak in the system maybe ?

It is pretty common to loose refrigerant when the system is not being used over an extended length of time. The seals only get lubricated when the refrigerant is moving. With the clutch on the compressor disengaged, the pump doesn't circulate. Most cars use the A/C during the defrost cycle to help dry out the air before heating it to defrost the windshield, The pump won't engage if the air temp is too cold.
