Leroy,
I just bought a 2005 passion, which came with 1 key.
This makes me paranoid because I'm OLD and put things down along my path, then can't remember where. (Ok - I did that before I got old.)
Would you mind recapping for me what I need to do get another key without driving to KC? Thank you very much for all of the information.

The only way to program the FOB is with the Mercedes DAS system test equipment. It takes about 30 seconds to program all the FOBs. Now making the key is easy just go to a key maker and have them cut a key for a Mercedes car, that will get you in a locked car but it will not start it up. If you have a real big problem with lost keys put something on them so you can allways find them. My habbit is the key is in my pocket or on the dresser and no other place, just like my wallet. No reason to lay it down and not know where it is at.

cfreidma, i believe that Smart Center Denver has one. However I do not believe that they have it working. Talk to Paul about it. Maybe Leroy can help out with getting it running?

I talked to the Smart center in CO. I think what the MB dealer is needing is the TAN code. So for the moment, I'm sol. How do I get a TAN code for the reprogramming? Thanks

cfreidma

You actually pay for the TAN code.

Example, you can install the factory cruse control, but you need a TAN code to make it work.

Everything I have read says the MB dealership sell it.

I think thats how it works, maybe a northen brother will be able to give you better details.

There are a couple members here that can do TAN code generation. I believe that the process involves the MB Star system being plugged into your car. Then a code from MB Star is entered in the TAN code generator. Then TAN code gen gives you (surprise) a TAN code that you type into MB Star. Not sure though.

BTW, TAN Code is TransAction Number Code, ususally referred to here in the States as Transaction Code. This is a one (although sometimes multi-) time use code. You've interacted with a system that has TAN codes before, I am certain. Think a card that grants access restrictions to a building/office, in an elevator where you swipe a FOB or card to go to certain floors, at a hotel/motel where you use a credit-card like key to enter your room, etc. etc.

Thanks guys.
I sent and email to Eddy at Flying Tiger (Canada).
He said the cost is 200.00 for a TAN code. He said the TAN code can be generated if I send him the VIN number.
---still working through this in email.
