First attempt at hyper mileage
Greetings All
I went to the same gas station and the same pump I’ve used to get all this data http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/194504.htmland will take everything my new trip computer has shown me to see what is the MAX I can get out of this 450.
I’ll be reporting mileage of the extinguished blips (as edits) and the grand total with all the driving tricks I used to get the hyper mileage #
OOHH and on a side note, I broke the cover for the gas cap, while trying to fuel it wouldn’t open, I pulled and pulled until I broke it, then I found the problem.
Why has NO ONE ever mentioned that if you accidentally lock your car (while I was getting out the money to pre pay for the gas) that it also locks the cover for the gas cap?
SSSSOOOO when you push that lock button it also locks the gas cap cover.
Another lesson learned

ASM, I remember asking the opposite question at the Dallas smart center - why wasn't the gas cap locked. They pointed out that the car was unlocked, which included the fuel filler door. I just assumed (yep, I know) that everyone knew that the filler door was locked/unlocked with the rest of the car. Another FAQ candidate.

Sorry about the cover! Wasn't this covered during the pre-flight at delivery time? Isn't this another motivating reason for everyone to at least browse the manual?

Reason: Wifed noticed the error, wanted to help, even she found out her extra weight in the car might be the cause of the lowered MPG

You live in hilly terrain, don't you? Consider coasting down all the hills....YUP...shift the smart into N and just coast. I willdo that whenever I am in hilly terrain (haven't been yet but i sure will when the situation presents itself.
Back when i was in college I had a 63 SAAB with freewheeling. It was built into the transmission...lift the gas pedal and away you go. IN the early mid 60's I was getting 33 mpg with that 3 cylinder, 2 cycle engine (750 CC) and anywhere I went there were no mosquitoes to be seen!!! LOLOL
That rather simple feature helped me get thru college! No just kidding but it had a definite POSITIVE effect on the gas mileage.
They discontinued free wheeling on the later SAABS because some "smart" politician decided that it was an unsafe driving practice and a law was passed preventing any cars from having that feature after 1965, I think. Once again our illustrious leaders looking out for our interests again....

last Try
Hey All
First I'll start with the tip of the day, never down shift when in manual. Just as an example. my 450 will NOT allow me shift into 6th below 35MPH and if I am in 6th and drift below 35MPH MB puts the car into 5th gear ( a hyper milers dream)
Of course there are exception to down shifting ONLY YOU can be the judge of wear or when not to do it.
Now for the numbers
As we all fill our tanks, we may do 1 click it get it to the even dollar value but sometimes we do several, that my friends could equal up to 1/4 gallon.
Now I know everyone has followed my mileage posts on http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/194504.html so high 40s are expected.
I'm looking for the 50 range ( and ,I don't think I'll able to get there)
My first blip went at 121
and My seconded went at 191.
I always assumed the first blip was 2.5 gallons (depending on THE# CLICKS DURING FILL UP ) BUT MY FIRST# IS 121 miles
Then my 2nd blip went at 191 (I'm thinking 191miles 3.5 gallons= barely in the 50 MPG range.
SSSSOOOO I had that light bulb go off in my head, this would be a good time for a disclaimer, I love and would be willing dive into the front of a live bullet to save the life of my wife .
Having said that (and her knowing that), all recent tests were done with he extra 110 Lbs. in ht car
Finally ASM
EDIT for 3rd Blip
Well the 3rd blip went out at 256 miles so I only got 65 miles between blips, my 450 has been very consistent, so I expect 4th to go out on the way home tomorrow night around the 320 mark SSSOO it doesn't look like I'll be breaking the 50 MPG barrier,.
I travel to NY on Thur so I'll fuel tomorrow night and record the gas taken + 1 click (same as my last fill) and we'll see what I was able to get for mileage with the new trip computer.
2nd Hyper miler tip, any time to can shift up to the next gear your mileage goes up ie. @ 40 MPH in 5th I record 48 mpg, if I switch to 6th it goes to 55. I've seen this kind on gain for every gear.
Rather than an edit, I'll do a final post tomorrow night with all the details and what my next 2 hyper tests will be.
