Get another Key

I bought a "used" 2006 smart and there is only the one key. Can a smart dealer get me another key?

The key has to be programmed for the car using the Star Diagnostic system. Many of the G&K dealers have the system. All Mercedes dealers should also have the system, but they may not have licensed the european smart codes for their system. You can't just mail-order a key because it has to be programmed with the car by the Star system.

I don't know if the smartusa dealerships will work on the older G&K converted models, that is up to their service manager.

Found another key

Greetings to all. I have a 2005 Smart Passion converted by G & K. I just completed installing a Harmin/Kardon Drive + Play. While I was running wires for the install, I was reaching in to the space between the lower dash area, which has the lighter and interior light switch and the panel that is below the drawer. I felt something move that felt strangely like a key. I didn't remember loosing one , so after more groping, I was able to extract a brand new Smart keyfob, keyed for my car. This worked perfectly. I don't know if this is a fluke but for all of you needing/wanting another key it maybe worth the time to search around back there. I hope there are others out there as lucky as I.

What a strange story (found another key). Have you tried this key on any other Smarts? I'm wondering if your found key is some kind of factory "skeleton" key?

Good question.I haven't seen any other 450's around to try it on. The metal part of the key is cut the same as the one I originally received from G & K so I have my doubts about it being a skeleton key.I have an email out to the dealership I work with in Germany asking if they know of the cars being shipped to other countries with the key there.
I would like to know if any one else has looked.

Incredible Find

This is an incredible find, Pawpac! There were a good number of cars sold that only came with one key. That was very curious, since most came with two. Up until now I've never heard of anything that even came close to providing a reason. Perhaps you've stumbled on it. If anyone else out there has one of these one-key smarts, you might try that same technique. Perhaps there was a portion of the original smarts that all had these second keys "hidden" for some strange security reason on the trip over. What an unusual and valuable piece of information. Thanks so much, Pawpac, even if it's just an odd coincidence.
