There is a company in the UK called Lockwood they have the dial kits. The part number for the 0-90 MPH and 0-7 RPM is P/N 8013 and is white faced. This P/N is for cars 2002 to 2006. Price is about $40.00. The diesel cars use a differant face on the tach. Or you can order one from smart but they are black faced. These are real easy to install.

I went to Vancouver recently and stopped by the Smart car dealer on Broadway. I told the guy straight up I had already bought a Smart but wanted to see what was available in Canada. Then I was taken to the car that I had REALLY wanted which was the diesel smart, over 60 mpg and funny thing was it was the sam maroon color as the one I had bought. The guy started it up for me and everything and left it running while he talked to me. Sweet.
He did say that he can not sell the car to be imported into the US. He was a very cool guy - knew all of the import issues, corporate decisions that make these cars inaccessible to american buyers.

Why not import diesel?

We are new to the community, and really want a diesel. We do not yet know or understand the issues relating to US (Ohio) dealer's assertion that we will not be allowed to purchase a diesel in Canada and get it registered in Ohio. If his assertion is accurate, then why not? What are the issues? Thanks for helping to educate us about this.

It isn't just because it is a diesel. We have a 450 (Not Grey Market) 2007 Passion, gasoline, which we purchased new from the MB/Smart dealer in Guadalajara. Of course, it is registered in Mexico, where we live, but we are free to drive it to the USA when we visit, but we can never import it to the USA and register it there. This is a real PITA, as our 'European Standards' vehicle is every bit as safe as a 'US DOT Standards' vehicle; even though the 'standards' are slightly different. It is all a political/economic method to control the market. So, here I sit, living in Mexico with one Mexican car that I can't register in the USA and one USA registered Japanese car that I can't register in Mexico and new regulations in the USA which are making it increasingly difficult for us to maintain US registrations and drivers licenses. We need a new state in the USA for retired folks who travel, have homes abroad or live and travel full time in luxurious motorhomes. Honest; we're not terrorists! We're peaceful folks with smart cars and we're too old to walk.

If you really want a diesel car convert a G&K car to a diesel engine and drivetrain. I did, it is not that hard and now I can run it on vegee oil if I want. But it will not be EPA certified anymore. Great miles per gallon but performance is slow.

The regulations that limit our choices are really a shame. I so wanted a Japanese mini truck. They can go 60 mph but the USA limits them to 25 mph. I don't get it.
The smart deisel cars are awesome - get insane great gas mileage.

Count me in 450 Gray market owner!

I've got a 2005, had it for over 3 years now. No mods, really, just an orange (Tangelo) paint job, license plate HABANRO. Love the car, 40,000 miles on it now. Just discouraged lately because the place that would fix it for me (Mesa Auto Works) no longer has the computer. Have had A/C problems, but fingers crossed is working OK now. Now I need the window mechanism to keep my window up! So much for the A/C, and in AZ no less. I think I will have to start fixing it myself? that will be a sight! I will start by adding windshield fluid (where?, lol)

up to 53 mpg, 50 usually without the A/C. 45 or so with.

The filler for the fluid is inside the RF access panel below the windshield. It pulls up for filling.

I have a "glider" (left the factory with no engine or trans) that I want to build up. Has anyone here done that?
