Key Fob Battery

Another deal I came across. You can get the Renata 1225 (this is the one recommended by smart) battery for $1.79 if you buy 10 of them at a time. My total cost was $17.91 plus $1.99 shipping for a grand total of $19.90. They are fresh too (expire 10/2013).

I have four keys so this is a good deal for me because I can use them up. If want less than 10 they are $1.99 each plus a single shipping fee of $1.99. Contact them at swatchbattery.com

Again, no interest in company, just sharing my bargain hunting experience with all the rest of the smart people out there!

There are CR1225 batteries. There are CR2016 batteries. My smart manual suggests a CR2016 is the correct replacement battery and doesn't specify a brand.

Do you drive 450s?

Ah! In another thread you just spoke of G&K cars. You do drive 450s!

The battery requirements for the 451s (the new smarts from SmartUSA) are different.

I've only had to replace 2 batteries out of 6 fobs. (4 for my cars and 2 for my parents car). Seems they die a whole lot quicker when you don't use the key.....or at least bring it near the car. My wife always has both her keys while my mother doesn't keep hers. I had to replace hers as it never goes in the car. My fob I just replaced the battery because I could.

I used a 2016 for it. Like the manual said. I hope you got the right battery. Sounds like it....450.

The CR1225 and CR2016 are two different in both size and spec. The 1225 is 12mm diameter, while the 2016 is 20mm.

My 450 -- 2006 CDI Cabrio -- uses the CR1225 in it's key fob.

Can someone explain why the fob battery needs to be replaced so often? The keyfobs from all my GM cars have lasted sometimes more than 10 years.
I guess I don't understand exactly what the fob does

They don't need to be replaced so often. They just get replaced so often. (Unless you've actually experienced the battery running down.) I was surprised the replacement was part of the 20k service.

The smart's light flashing upon lock will go to 9 flashes according to the manual when the key fob battery is low, giving another hundred or so uses before it's dead.

The manual said nothing about the beeps from the alarm, only that the 9 flashes would occur. I had an eye toward this as well, but saw no mention.

That explains why the smart batteries I bought are too big. Say, I have 2 20mm 451 batteries if anyone wants them.
