smartie yank, the number 1026 was provided by G&K. It does NOT include the ZAP 2002 and 2003 models since those cars were owned by ZAP and only ZAP has those release numbers. I do not have the exact number of ZAP early models at this time. It is supposed to include all other cars imported through G&K. I know of at least four on the list that were brought in independently, but still through the importation process of G&K. There were probably others as well. Give me your last 6 digits if you want me to confirm that.

Ron as I understand G&K converted all of the ZAP cars, the earliest being the 2003 and latter 2nd generation smarts. When I got mine George said that he had to convert the ZAP 2003 & 2004 before he do any of his own cars. One of these was Tom's 2003 in Idaho. I think he got his smart about 3 weeks before I got mine.

When I put the deposit on my smart George had the original 400 ZAP smarts plus 93 of his own. My cousin hand carried my deposit and toured the facility. When I picked up my car there was still a large number of smarts at G&K but I have no idea how many as I only saw one part of the facility. When I first talked to George about buying a smart and the deposit he wanted he told me he had 93 of his own smarts. I picked up my smart about ten weeks after that conversation. I don't have any real information as to what took place after the date I picked up my car which was 4-18-06.

The serial no. is 243149 if you want to check your list. Thanks, Dan

Don the key is not hard to find, it is a common Mercedes key the number is listed on the Canadian site. The problem is without the fob, the car won't start. It might help if you lock your key in the car but that is pretty hard to do in a smart. You can lock the car without the fob but you have to make a conscious effort at it not just a memory laspe. There is even an accessory button that replaces the key hole behind the shifter. You remove the metal key from the fob and use only the plastic fob itself.

By the way since I left L.A. I don't worry about locking my car nearly as much.;)

Please describe the 'accessory button', its source and how it is installed.
I am very familar with separating the metal key from the fob.

This is exactly the area that I wish to modify on my car.

PM me if it requires revealing what should not be revealed. Provide your phone # and I will call you.

Thank you in advance.

It's not a mystery Don, just go to Smartieparts.com. Steven has them listed under misc. items for the 450. They are made by MDC so they are of good quality. There is quite a bit of info on the Canadian Club smart Car site and some discussions about cycling the diesel glow plugs. Kane also discusses them on his Evilution site. For me they are a bit spendy for the gain if there is any. The key works fine and I have been known to be frugal at times.

Cheers, Dan
