MPH, manual shifting, non E10 gas

Hey All

Some 450 owners have stated they get 50 MPG+ in their Smarts, as can be seen here I hit 48 MPG just once and get mid 40s the rest of the time http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/detail/194504.html

So yesterday, when fueling up in the mountains, I filled up with Shell V power 93 octaine and decided to drive in 100 % manual.

A Disclaimer needs to be made here: 1, first time I've used a non E10 gas, 2: first time I shifted exclusivly in manual 3: used back roads (rt 28 with a speed limit of 55 mph).

Now having said that, my first blob usually goes out @ 106 to 116 miles mark, this time my first blob didn't go out until the 132 mile mark (almost a 20% increase).

Of course only time will tell if these advantage hold true for the rest of the tank, but I have high hopes.

The only thing I will not know in the end (if the mileage stays high is), was it the non E 10 gas, manual shifting, or the 55 MPH speed limit, or a combo of all 3.

My tire pressure is 32 PSI (all the time) I did the DE-Lip and the K&N filter 3 tanks ago with no noticable difference so if my mileage does increase then these factors can be ruled out.

It will be at least a week before we know the final results (40 mile per day commute), but I will update with the final results.

ASM

EDIT: Update, 2nd blip just went out @ 201 miles still looking good

EDIT: 3rd blip went out @ 263 miles

Edit: 4th blib went out @ 323 miles

Refiled with V93 octane Shell (this one has E10 added) I had 366 (and still 1 blip left) miles on the trip and it took 7.78 gallons for a total of 47 MPG .

Will repeat using exact conditions as with last tank, this will tell us if the E10 plays much of a roll.

Will update as gas gets used

Here's a link to the air intake de-lip mod:

http://www.evilution.co.uk/index.php...=95&men=engine

K&N is a low restriction air filter: www.knfilters.com/

Keep in mind this all applies to the 450 version.

Delipping is not a mod to the airbox, it is a mod to the inlet pipe. The K&N is just a much better air filter.

The above is true but, has anybody investigated the availability of a K&N for the 451 ?

Has anyone pulled the air intake grill to see if that stupid lip is on the 451 ?

Both of these mods with an S-Mann scoop (450) have really helped my car.

I've done several other things, I don't talk about because all it would do is start a controversy. I have enough trouble already with people on this board that want to argue with me after I have, 'Been there & Done that'

Ignorance is bliss.......... And bliss is expensive !

If I drive 'Light-footed' (I usually don't) I get between 55-60mpg.
Driving with 'Verve', I average 48-52mpg (City & Hwy)

Before anybody asks; I HAVE MODEL 450 !

Do you know what the purpose of that lip was?

I certainly seems to be a deterent to good flow which is what you would want there....having the lip on there, that is. Removing it seems a good thing.

Blocks water

jonnysan

People say it it to stop water from getting into the air box, BUT the air box has a drain hole in it, so even if water does get in it has a place to drain out.

The exact K&N filter http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...px?Prod=E-9257

Also, the things I post here in the 450 thread are spific to the 450, if I find things that are for both I'll post in the general section ie. My Smart and the snow
