Don't really know for sure, but it is likely to be by oil pressure. Watch this video on the NA 4B11, as I'm thinking our setup is likely to be similar (ours of course only has the adjustable timing on intake ). There's an illustration of the action about 7:35 in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb4zdcD0G-Y

It's interesting how comparable these motors are in output on a per liter basis:
The 3B2(smart)-71 HP (1 liter)
The 4B11(Lancer)-152 HP (2 liter).
[edit:I had somehow gotten it into my head it was 74 even though the title of the thread clearly says differently. BUT, the Cali spec Lancer is 143 HP, so there!]

Time will tell how similar these two engines are in design-I'm counting on it being a lot. It should also be interesting to see how the the plain-Jane Lancer engine will compare to a Evolution engine- there are bound to be some differences, but it's likely someone will try to turbo this new design Lancer using Evo cast-off parts.

For those who care:
The 4B11T(EVO X)- 291 HP (2 liter,9:1 CR)

Thanks for the video... I suspect this is same oil actuated system but only on intake side as seen in the few cut away photos we have of the Smart motor for the auto show

Mitsupowered,

As a DSM enthusiast, I'm sure you are familiar with Buscher Racing. Dave Buscher's shop is about 10 miles west of me, and there are a bunch of tuned 4G63 engines around these parts due to him. There are a lot of wicked Talons about. We have the DSM/Subaru shootout every year here at Norwalk Speedway, and a lot of the Evo guys are in the local Subaru club. I missed getting a free 3" turbo back for my WRX by about 5 minutes when Dave was looking for a volunteer to try his new design. He's a good guy.

I'm guessing he might be interested in playing with the 3B2!

Here's a photo I haven't seen before on here

Hmm, - 4 lug nuts. Perhaps this is a cutaway of the FourFour?

Hey there smorris

Yup I've heard of Buscher. I planned to go to the shootout and Cedar Point a few years back but never followed through.

I am looking forward to when the turbo smart comes out. Someone posted that they're already for sale down in Mexico. I wonder if the US will get them before 2009.

The pic you posted is from the Mitsubishi i
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_i

Once the cars are here and some DYI work starts to come up, I'd like to see about sourcing certain parts-filters, gaskets, non reusable bolts, etc directly though Mitsu dealerships. I've seen it where the exact same part (down to the part number) costs 2x as much just because someone bought for their "Dodge" rather than their Mitsubishi.

I'm also waiting to see if the ECU is a Mitsubishi box or if MB subbed it out to another manufacturer. It's another thing I'm hoping we can ride the coattails on off of the expected EVO aftermarket. Of course, Europe has the 451 turbo already and the older design has been "chipped" by a couple of tuners, so one way or another, things are bound to get interesting!!
