Any early oil changers out there?

For those who said they would do their first oil change at 500 or 1000 miles, I am curious as to whether you found the anticipated shavings and other new engine detritus that was anticipated. I am nearing the end of my 500 mile break-in period and wanted to know if I should be thinking of doing an oil change.

Also, once the break in is done, is there any problem in getting the engine to higher rpm to get more oomph, especially in 1st and 2nd

Thanks,
David

I've had the pleasure of driving a broken-in 451. It quite readily will reach higher revs if you stand on the pedal.. it's also surprisingly smooth and makes wonderful noises when it is revving.

I can hear it now... damnit, I need my smart.

Huh... I didn't really wait for a brake in but I am pretty happy with the way mine sounds... Even had someone ask if it had exhaust.

I had 625 miles on it and it was expectedly blackened, didn't have a particularly strong gasoline odor to it and did have some very small slivers in it, as I also expected.
I do have to comment that as the car breaks in (I personally feel it takes more than 500 miles to really break in) the engine IS becoming more powerful and the transmission IS shifting more smoothly with less delay in the shift. Today I drove it in the automatic mode and was pleasantly surprised at how nicely it worked in traffic. I really was eggpedaling it too much before....alittle more throttle seems to introduce a slightly longer time between shifts and a smoother quicker shift when it occurs.
And it is not shifting anything like the car did last summer during the Street Tour....not even close.
I am very happy with everything about my smart car at this point....EVERYTHING. And with the added convenience of the ScanGauge telling me what's going on behind the scenes, I AM REALLY HOOKED NOW!!!

I questioned my Smart service guy at length about changing my oil at 1000 miles. He said over and over again that there was no need whatsoever this early. I gave him all the stuff I had read on the threads and he wouldn't budge off his position. He said I would be wasting my money, but he would be happy to do it for me if I wanted it.

I don't know. Never had a service guy turn down an oil change like this before. Maybe it's a waste of money to do the change this soon?

Or maybe it is the "company line." PAG/sUSA has the smart centers by the throat.

But if anyone has an early oil change, please retain and drain the OEM filter as best you can, double-wrap it in zip-lok bags and send it to me. Address provided by PM; I'll reimburse the shipping.

Do you need a new drain screw every time you change the oil? I plan on getting mine changed at 1000 miles, which...should be next week!!

No not a new plug (screw) every time - just a new copper washer. the plug is about 3-1/2" long and the engine side has a magnetized mini-filter on the end.

Is it a car? Is it a mind set? It's BOTH!

No, just a new filter, oil and the drain plug gasket or washer.
Normally I don't change the drain plug washer unless it looks rough but this is on my Miata and Acura, I have not seen the washer on a smart yet.
