I don’t have a dog in the red fight, but it occurs to me that there may be a reason for the semi-red - it is noticeable (We’ve noticed!!). There are lots of metallic “clear” reds out there, mostly dark reds - Toyotas, Chryslers, Chevies, Hondas, tada…tada. They all look the same; they are all non-descript. Can’t say that for smart red. When the New Beetle came out they offered (still do I think) a group of colors not seen for years, sort of pastel, non-metallic ones. They didn’t have the bling of in-vogue metallics and pearlescents, but they did catch the eye. And further, they did help define the shape of the car (you saw the whole car, not reflected highlights from here-and-there). Maybe smart has the same idea. I am surprised that their metallic blue is so run-of-the mill. It is blue, but what else? The metallic silver, well, just traditional M-B family.
Disclaimer: I will be white/black/red & black interior.
N.B. To give the smart red a classier sounding cognomen than “tomato soup red,” I would call it “Buñol Red” (as in “La Tomatina”).
