I bought the 4 year warranty. I like the idea of a short standard warranty and buying more if you want it. A 90 day standard warranty would have been fine with me. It's all about options and not buying what you don't want. I wanted a longer warranty, so I payed for it.

Bob
have you read the fine print on that "warranty"? and know about the deductable?
My 451 SMART ForTwo will not be covered by the Smart branded overpriced service contract..period
If I feel that repair and reliability issues are common, expensive, and not going to be adequately addressed by the Manufacture... I will sell the lemon and move on to a more well covered and reliable product....
MSRP is already too much for a micro econo box... insulting to ask me to pay more just to get an industry standard warranty length out of a MB product...even worse to ask that kind of money then small print away any value....
As posted on these forums the Smart branded extended service contract is about the worst one I have ever studied... basically a junk bond...IMO
Save your bucks for the potential high cost repair, maintain your equipment well, don't deliberately abuse it, and 95% of the time you will be ahead...and slightly richer
I pasted on smart's EW and instead bought from Warranty Direct, courtesy of Bremer Speck. Met a nice gentleman by the name of Mike and he took care of me. I even like that the warranty is transferrable to the next driver. Some may think this wasn't wise but I believe in car warranties, especially on a newly launched car. I have no idea what's in store for me down the road in year 3 or 4. I would rather have bumper to bumper coverage for 4 years instead of 2. Thanks again, Regina
I suppose you missed the part about the $100 being "per repair"
Have you ever heard of someone returning several times for diagnosis, replacement of a part, then retuning later because "that" did not solve the problem...? Happens a lot with new vehicle models that don't have a repair history built up and ALL the techs are guessing for awhile...
With a real factory warranty, all this means is a pain to keep returning...
BUT, with a service contract, it can mean several hundred dollars chasing a problem. This is the most common complaint on car and truck forums when the topic is third party service contracts.
I get your point. Persuade others to be leery of it, but I thought it worked for me. I didn't buy a $15000 car because I was trying to save money on repair costs. Only time will tell. Hopefully neither of us will need to use any repair services. I will not be disappointed if my money goes to waste.
The extended warranty was dirt cheap and I almost bought it. But I only plan on keeping this car for 2 years, then hopefully upgrading to the smart EV version if it ever makes it to the U.S.
I normally don't like extended warranty plans on anything (cars or appliances) because it is some of the most expensive insurance there is out there. However the cost of smart's extended warranty program is very low. So if you plan on keeping the car for a while I would go for it.
1. Have not read the contract
2. Are not aware of the pricing on these plans for other much more complicated and costly cars and trucks..
The product that Smart branded and is selling is one of the very most expensive with least amount of covered parts I have seen in the last 15 years...
And it is the first contract that I have ever seen that requires a car owner to prove services more frequently then the manufacturer requires...
Thankfully we have the option to cancel within a reasonable period and get the money back...
I am not a fan of any third party service contract ...but if you have to have one for piece of mind; I highly recommend you shop around...there are better companies and options for less money out there.
Calling the smart branded extended service contract "dirt cheap" is really stretching it a lot...IMO
Since you can purchase a contract at any time prior to the expiration of the factory warranty does it not make sense to wait?
I plan to do so. There is no way to know, going in, how long you will keep the car. Suppose two years later smart offers a far superior vehicle or options? Suppose your smart turns out to be a lemon? Suppose you get tired of it once the newness wears off?
Why rush right in and "soon part with your money" as the saying goes.
