I don't understand, "Why not?" in the U.S. version (rear fog light)

I have always wanted to know why some European cars brought to the U.S. (and why American cars) don't have rear fog lights. It would just make sense to me. Anyone got any ideas why not?

Good question; there are US spec EU cars imported with their rear fogs intact but no US made cars with them that I'm aware of. Why - maybe cost or the NIH syndrome?

I don't understand the reasoning in having rear fog lights....

Aren't fog lights for being able to see while driving in fog ?

I back up so slow in broad daylight that I just don't see the need for rear fog lights; how fast do you back up in fog ?

Is it for vehicles behind you to be able to see you ?

maybe because the few euro cars in america that still have the rear lights (jags, saabs, etc.) have morons that drive them with the fog lights switch pulled all the way out, triggering the front AND rear. these idiots are blissfully UNAWARE of the rear light feature, and take great delight in blinding those behind us.

True. We Americans think that if we have it, use it. Ignorant to the fact that there is a specific time it SHOULD be used.

Mud Pie, the rear fog lights are there to let anyone behind you know that you are there well in advance. They work very well, but as HerrZ says, people would use them wrong here.

OMG, is that a rear fog light? I've noticed vehicles with similar lights and thought someone had just gone hog wild with backup lights, LOL

Oh, and what Mud Pie said in #3.

I think that's the reversing lamp - rear fogs have red lenses.
