After hearing all the stuff about the dealer-installed fog lights not working, I can't help but wonder if the US smart's intolerant logic & 'lectric system will allow aftermarket DRLs, or if there will have to be some additional magic cast.

I may go without until smart comes up with their own retro kit and installation.

Old Smart... and John cuz he is my friend

USAA is rather accepting in my opinion.... the F350 is NOT factory DLR but there is a hack to make the GEM (same as the smart SAM) believe it is a Canadian model

USAA took it on my say so that DLR was enabled on the F350 (it is) and I get the modest discount ( I am a rare bird that thinks DLRs (at reduced power ) are a good thing

That said... my car is due in Monday... I told USAA that I would be enabling DLR... They insured appropriately

My plan is to self (DYI) a second circuit (using Kane's idea of switch bar enable) and a relay and a secondary bulb added into the Head Light assy.... sure NOT a true key on DLR but still keeping my word and intent....

It will take awhile, but I know eventually we will have savvy enough folks who learn how to turn on the already there SAM logic to enable DLRs...

I do NOT believe DRLs are incompatible with the head light auto on feature

Fred, glad to hear your car is on it's way - finally! And FWIW, my USAA person told me the DRLs wouldn't save me any money but they did knock off $0.98 for the LoJack.

Weird how different states have different pricing and discounts... DLRs on the F350 and now the smart (while not much) are a 1.5% discount... what ever that equates to on a $34 per month premium

More importantly is the additive discounts..... on the USAA web site my insurance is presented total cost and cost after discounts....over all the reduction is significant....as is the "rebate" every year....wink

The USAA DRL discount on my BMW is less than $5.00 per year really not much.

For me it is not the insurance savings but the visibility I will have some when I make up my mind what the best way to do it is.

Rog..O, I'm there too - I want real, non-jury rigged DRLs more than the USAA discount. But I want it to happen right, first time around. I remain mindful of the problems with smart dealers installing OEM foglights and can't get them to work. Still! There may be more to this than meets the eye. Yup, I've gotten cold feet.
