If you want to know how to operate things, then it is the owner's manual you want.
If you want to know how the specific items work, then you probably want the service manual. That's what I would like to have, in fact I will try to buy a PDF version with my car as a part of the deal.
The service manual will come shortly after the car purchase. I'm of the opinion that FSMs should be included with any car, for those of us who like to know how things work, as well as how to fix them
M-B has made it very difficult for a non-M-B shop to get and use the information (impossible overseas), but it is my understanding that any new car sold in the U.S. has to make the information available to the public. A service manual will be very expensive. That said, I intend to order one, and a parts list, if it isn't too outrageous ($200 may be my cut point).
Aw, crap! Between my wish to be helpful and my inability to type well I've discovered that my 2008 owners manual is really a 2006 manual misfiled. Not much good for a 451. I am very embarrassed.
I've spent the last five hours scouring the internet looking for either a 2007 or 2008 downloadable owner's manual without success.
I'm thinking about calling a dealer in Windsor, Ontario that I have visited before... I'll just order myself one.
That or a call to the UK... heh.
Dave
Remember, all smarts in Canada are sold directly by M-B dealers. Unless they have disclosure laws like we do, they likely won't play ball. The UK -- at a minumum you will get RHD info, and possibly a quite different car altogether (if you get anything).

Eh, at this point, I just want an owner's manual. The rest will wait.
Damn.... we should have had lhoboy kipe one out of the glove box this weekend in DC
Actually, funny that you mention this. I was at the DC event, and as I was waiting on the steps for my car to pull up, I had to step aside for one of the guys from the smart team, who was carrying a shrinkwrapped owner's information set from the back of one of the cars.
There were too many witnesses around for me to knock him off for it... (kidding)
