Reclining passenger seat

I know a while back someone was explaining on how to make the passenger seat recline farther back by pulling the recline handle and pushing the seat back as hard as you could. Is this the real deal or is it messing something up?

I've done it, and I haven't seen any problems with the seats. It's still an open question as to whether riding with a hyper-reclined seat compromises that person's safety in a collision.

It works, but it'll take a good amount of effort enough to make others bite their teeth if they watched someone else do it. What your doing is sheering a piece of metal that limits the seat from reclining back enough but it's fine, once you do it the first time it'll go back and forth easily.

I found it easiest on the passenger side where I'm inside facing the seat with my feet mashed against the foot well and using all my strength to push on the top of the seat and pushing it down as far as I want it to go.

Cheers!
Larry

Would you be able to claim the seat is "Broken" under warrantee?

That question can be closed, it is not safe to drive a smart with the seat back further than where it originally stopped.

I seriously doubt that, I believe it is just over stretching a spring.

Actually it's not a spring, the spring is still intact but it's the piece of metal that you can see from the driver side on the driver side seat and the passenger side on the passenger side seat, once you sheer that piece of metal that prevents it from being relinced further back then it's not visible anymore.

And about safety, this wasn't ment to be driven with the seat reclined, but instead to have an option to take a nap or rest in a more comfortable position

Err.. I Personally don't care much about warrantees since I over use the car anyways..

Cheers!

Thanks for all the replies! It is only the passenger seat I was asking about. My wife drives only when I get tired on a long trip. I would rather recline and sleep then watch her drive!!! I never worry about her driving while I am dreaming!

I don't have my car yet, but should be receiving it mid Nov.

Can someone try this and prove that you aren't breaking the car? Maybe tape it or something?

The only thing is, when reclining the seat, be careful you don't break the bar for the luggage compartment cover, if you have one. Rather than for safety, I suspect the limited degree of seat tilt has more to do with steering clear of the support bar than anything. If you look at it, the seat travel is limited to come as near to that bar as possible while never actually touching it. Just a single ratchet more recline and the seat would touch the bar. More than that, and it could break it depending on how quickly or forceably the seat is reclined.
