The only thing is, when reclining the seat, be careful you don't break the bar for the luggage compartment cover, if you have one. Rather than for safety, I suspect the limited degree of seat tilt has more to do with steering clear of the support bar than anything. If you look at it, the seat travel is limited to come as near to that bar as possible while never actually touching it. Just a single ratchet more recline and the seat would touch the bar. More than that, and it could break it depending on how quickly or forceably the seat is reclined.
Good point! I hadn't thought of that! I plan on getting the cover.
That question can be closed, it is not safe to drive a smart with the seat back further than where it originally stopped.
I don't know about anyone else, but my only intent with this "mod" was the ability to recline the passenger seat to the same degree as the driver seat ALREADY can do - from the factory.
Can someone try this and prove that you aren't breaking the car? Maybe tape it or something?
Sorry can't, I already "BROKE" my car.. ha ha ha.. j/k well no I can't tape it since I already did the mod, and to about 7 other cars too when we had a little get together, it was quick so we didn't think about taping it. But yea..

Yours reclined backwards on your driver seat? Mines didn't.. I had to bend the tab on both the driver and passenger seat.. as well as all the other smart car i've seen, I wonder if the dealership did it to your driver seat prior?
The driver seats don't recline flat, but they do recline to a point. The passenger seats apparently don't recline, unless you override the limit tab.
It appears the limit tabs are different for driver & passenger, and either one can be overridden..
Hmm... interesting my driver side never reclined at all, it only was able to reclined forward but not backwards to rest my eyes or anything if I was pulled off to the side. Oh well it does now
