Holy cow it works! I thought this whole seat recline thing was a crazy insider joke and I tried pushing the seat of couple of times but it didn't budge. After reading this latest thread I thought "what the heck" and I leaned much harder into the seat and amazingly it started to slowly bend itself backwards. That little tab didn't shear off, it just bent back to it's new position. Now I can recline the seat like I want, and finally....after almost a year with the car...I can pull over and take a nap. Thanks

Ever occur to anyone that the seats don't recline all that far so as to keep your 'lil punkin' head off the front bumper of the car or truck that rearends you? Nah, that's too simple..........

Of course it occured... but my response is.. "uh.. so..? point being...?" I have other things to worry about then if I'm reclined so far back to worry about how close my head is to the back of the car.. plus I don't drive like a "punk" with my arms all extended out, seat reclined all the way and trying to look all cool ;)

I do have to admit I did drive like that for like 5 mins and I realized people driving around you start acting all weird cuz they can't see you and they think the Smart car is driving by itself! HAHAHAHA..!

Or in my case it helped with a photo shoot on Halloween!!!

Oh and by the way... I had the same reaction you did "I drove for 6 months, cross country always wanting to get some rest and why couldn't I figure this out sooner?!" hehe..

Will the seat back remain in the same chosen (standard/normal) locked position when one gets rear ended or have a frontal impact?
Does the forcible recline to increase to a greater obtuse angle (which I favor by the way) influence this in any fashion?
I really haven't checked this out nor do I think I'm qualified unless someone can explain that this is okay to do.

The fact that this restraining tab is so easy to break tells me that it is not the part of the seat that is designed to restrain anything in a crash. The force required is a small fraction of what would be experienced in a rear-end collision. The reason I know this is because I was rear ended once in my SUV and there is just no comparision to the force that occurs (it feels more like an explosion and being shot out of a cannon). The part of the mechanism that locks the seat is on the opposite side and it is not affected by this modification.

I want to do this as well. But just so that I'm clear, will the ratchet and lock work correctly beyond the original angles to include the new recline position(s) or just up to the original angles?

It'll work and lock just like original angles but now you can have the benefit of the ADDITIONAL angles Here let me push down on your seat.... =P =D

Cheers!
