I have heard nothing of the sort.
The main points brought by others apply to both M and D modes: smoother shift between 1st and seconds gears and no more squatting / rear lifting a second or few after coming to a stop with brakes firmly applied.
There is the ability to *enter* manual mode with the paddles and reenter automatic as well.
