Excellent Idea for a poll. I was thinking of doing the same thing, but include other problems, like shifter jam and Car wont start, or are these all considered transmission problems? I would like to know the percentage of cars with problems. How many cars have been delivered on this forum and of these, how many are having serious problems? 12000 members, but only about 4000? cars delivered total in the US.
All new cars have problems. Are these problems greater than average for a new car launch?
Just wondering......Meaux
It only let me have 5 poll options and my original thought was the using the "D" mode was possibly part of the problem since the EU cars don't have the Americanized "D" (that I'm aware of). It'd be nice to know that of the problem children, who has the updated shifter, what the build dates were, etc. Mine sat in port so long that I have the new shifter and who knows what else got fixed. Next one would be where the problem cars are and what dealers and who owns them - also, are these the dealers that have proven themselves less than honest?
I could go on - its the consultant in me, maybe PAG needs to hire a market research company to conduct owner surveys on quality...
I'm a bit confused, I thought the main issue was with a part in the shifter not a transmission problem? In the case it is the shifter I'd think that driving (or actually shifting) aggressively would not matter if using the paddles, would be hard to pin down all handling of the shifter for parking and such among all the owners all of the time (not to mention how it was handled by techs at the dealer) I'd think.
I've had guests and been away more recently, perhaps I am missing the latest and there are now transmission problems surfacing?
By the by, we just passed 1000 miles and loving it - it only gets better
Just lumping anything transmission related together since when people talk about the shifter the thread is usually transmission related. Had a thought that maybe the "D" was the problem. But now that I think about it, since its all electronic, its the shifter that makes the difference.
I'm at 2K and it keeps wanting to go faster and MPGs are getting better.

Ah, okay to me the broken shifter piece is one thing, the actual transmission something else, and I am unaware of any numbers of people experiencing problems/repairs with the transmission itself.
No problems so far (will probably regret saying that!) and I've been driving somewhat aggressively in Auto [D] for the short time we've had the car. My opinion only, but your foot tells the car what to do; if you're hesitant with the throttle the car will sort of putter away with the "rocking" motion on shifts. If you push the pedal sharply to about the 3/4 position the car takes off like a rocket and shifts at around 4.5K to 5K rpm - pretty impressive at stoplights and it's fooled some people around Dayton.
DITTO!
Love the rocket take-offs, I love surprising people that think I'm going to putt-putt away...
I Kept beating this corvette to the takeoff a couple times at stoplights two days ago. I don't think he liked it, lol
There is one option for no, with no explanation and 4 or five with a yes!!! Biassed poll that means nothing. If you have problems with the tranny its because you either dont know how to use it or you are expecting it to do something it is not designed to do.
My manual tranny wont let me change gears without pressing that 3rd pedal down there......
this automatic gearbox wont do what I want it to do.....
when I suddenly stop, my manual tranny kills the engine...
All these are comments that people HAVE said!!! about a transmition they did not know how to operate... It does not mean the transmition is bad! just the driver is not capable and needs to learn!
I've experienced some troubles with reverse on my smart. I have a basement garage and the smart is often parked on an incline. The first time I parked it, it was nose first, so I had to back up an incline to exit my garage. It seemed to confuse the transmission. The car kind of lurched out of the garage and when I got out there was the strong smell of burning brakes. For some reason I think the front brakes were locking up when I was trying to pull out. Since then I have always backed into the garage, so I can pull out in drive (This happened on the first day I had my smart, after driving the car for about 500 miles, I tried it again and had the same thing happen). I also had an episode where I was backing in down the ramp, and I stopped, put it in drive to correct a little bit, and put it back in reverse. When I took my foot off the brake, there were 3 loud clunks as the car lurched backwards. I've racked up about 500 miles on my car. I drive the car gently. The pause between gears never bothered me, but some of the things the transmission has done in reverse on hills is worrisome. Has anybody else experienced anything similar with their smart?

The smell you report is most likely the adhesive in the friction material (brake smell) in your clutch. The hill holder function should cut out very quickly.
You have a very low milage car, the issue I belive is just the clutch getting adjusted to your circumstance and should be amost gone by the time you read this. The clunks you describe concern me one poster here had problems with the cluch actuator if your car is not running just fine by now you may want to take it in for a check at the service department. as the miles add up you should see a marked improvement of shifting smoothness. If not it is abnormal from my own experiance and what I have been reading here.
