To minimize the jerk, do a lift and shift. You basically lift off throttle pedal as you upshift in M mode, this will minimise the jerk sensation. Its more apparent on 1st to 2nd gear and getting lesser as it is progress.

Once you familiar enough with the AMT over the miles, you can even anticipate and induce gear change in A mode.

Do check out the UK Smart site. There are tonnes of reference for the 4/2. They may be for the previous version as such I'm not sure how much the 451 has gone difference.

Having said that all AMT have a jerk behavior and indecisive shift in A mode when driver hesitate or driving in an inconsistent flow traffic.

The 4/2 does not have crawl function hence in bumper to bumper traffic can be a pain while it does have hill assist.

COupled with a longer shift time, the delay and jerk is more apparent at least in the previous 4/2 vs the 4/4.

I drove a 4/4 and with similar 6spd AMT, i drive 95% on M mode as I like to be in control of the gear selection. I can cruise as low as 40mph on 6th gear which is about 1.9k rpm but any more slower or lifting off the pedal, it will downshift!

Driving in M mode also minimise the AMT trying to anticipate what you want next and the journey will become more smoother. Driver hesitation due to inexperience with the AMT will aggravate it further! Its a trait we see from many new SMART owner.

The AMT in A mode can be driven aggresively too! I have push it to red before it upshift in A mode and thats equal fun and control on the mountain twisty!

The North American spec transmission is different than the ROW transmission. We DO have a crawl function, as well as different gearing and a different shift lever assembly.

I was refering to the previous 4/2. As for the current 4/2 451, I believe its the same for all 4/2 WW. I doubt North America get a different tranny setup/function from the rest. The CRAWL essentially a SW programming and should have little or no mechanical differences.

Jesse, just out of curiosity, since the 451 NA model is a different setup and I'm getting between 42-45 mpg, what kind of mileage are you getting on yours? Thanx.

Wahi, well I drive a 4/4 but there are a sizeable 4/2 here so I shall share with yuo what they posted in our forum. However the local Daimler has not brought in the 451 yet. The previous version is dramatically different: 699cc 3 inline with tiny turbo! I believe they are getting very similar to the 4/4. I get easily 16-17km/Liter or about 6L/100Km which is like 40mpg.(based on internet conversion formula). The 4/2 is about the same better maybe just 5-10% better.

The NA shifter is different from the ROW. All NA vehicles have the "softip" functionality as standard, including the Pure.

The US version is geared differenty as well, for lower RPM at cruise and a lower first gear.

Big difference is the PRND sequence on our shifters, not required elsewhere (except maybe Canada - not sure on that.)
